About Us
Ferris Farms is situated on approximately 100 rolling acres outside of Dixboro, MI, near Ann Arbor. The farm is home to lamb, chickens and other animals who help close the nutrient loop for the hoophouse and garden.
Ingredients We Use
The fertility plan for Ferris Farm is based around compost, manure, cover crops, and supplemental (organic) fertilizer for special crops. Corn gets extra bloodmeal for nitrogen, tomatoes get gypsum for calcium, etc. Manure and plant materials are composted on-site and supplemental compost is locally sourced.
Our Practices
Food is grown and harvested entirely by hand, the only mechanical actions every year are the tilling in of the cover crop in the spring and of cover crop seed and the summer’s tired plants in the fall. This allows greater control and leads to better care of the microclimate of each individual plant, which in turn leads to higher quality produce. We use double dug beds in the hoophouse and in parts of the garden, drip tape irrigation and overhead hand watering for greens and cole crops.
Most food for Lunasa Market is picked, washed, and packed on market day. Some things later in the season will be picked the day before, but always lettuces and other delicate products will have been in the ground less than 24 hours before you see them at market, so you know you are getting the freshest and finest ecologically grown, hand-picked produce available.
Highlights
Ferris Farms specializes in greens, tomatoes, and hot peppers. Who knows, this year we may start specializing in more! If there is something you would like us to grow or simply grow more of, just talk to the grower, at market. That’s why local food is so fantastic. Local food is your food; from, for, and of your community!
