About Us

Our farm is located in the Sharon Short Hills in Western Washtenaw County. We moved to our farm in 1979 and have raised many critters (i.e. cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, chickens, geese, turkeys, rabbits) without using growth hormones and antibiotics. We are in the process of moving towards a sustainable, grass-fed model of agriculture. We no longer grow row crops such as corn, barley and oats. The terrain is rolling, and the land is best suited for pasture and hay. We are located on the second highest ridge in Washtenaw County, and we have a 10 KW wind energy turbine on the highest point of the farm.

Ingredients We Use

At present we are building our pasture and hay soils with supplements of organic minerals such as lime and ocean kelp, as well as bacteria and fungi necessary for soil health. Our animals are raised almost exclusively on poly-crop pastures of grasses, legumes, and forbs and dry hay during the winter months. Feed is supplemented with flax seed to build immune systems and organic minerals and Atlantic kelp as mineral supplements. We purchase organic corn and organic beans in order to avoid GMO tainted animal feed.

Our Practices

During May and June calving occurs in our pastures. Cattle are moved daily from small paddocks and not allowed to return to an area that was just grazed. This “Mob Intensive Grazing” (MIG) enhances pasture regrowth and reduces parasite infection in our 50 cow-calf herd of Angus-Hereford cattle. Moving cattle daily not only provides fertilizer (pee and poop) to our soils, but the trampling of grasses also builds carbon in the soil. Our lambs, Nigerian Dwarf goats, and Siris llama spend their summer months on pasture. ND goats have access to a barn during kidding and milking. Our Siris llama guards the lambs and goats from the potential predation of coyote attacks. In June our feeder piglets are purchased in Shipshewana and raised in our large barn with access to a large, outside play area to play pig games. Upon arrival at our farm, the piglets are given preventive antibiotics in their water for three days to mollify the effects of coming through stockyards. They receive no other antibiotics, and their immune systems are bolstered with flax seed in their feed. The pigs are raised on a feed mixture of ground organic corn, organic beans and oats, alfalfa hay, kelp and organic feed concentrates.

Misc.

Our lambs are grass fed, no antibiotics or growth hormones are used.
